GUELPH, ON, May 8, 2012 /CNW/ - The Co-operators today released its eighth annual sustainability report, inviting readers to "Take a Closer Look." The document outlines the organization's progress in 2011 in achieving its economic, social and environmental objectives.

In 2011 the organization's sustainability efforts were recognized with a #1 ranking on the list of "50 Best Corporate Citizens in Canada" by Corporate Knights, an organization that promotes socially responsible business practices and the advancement of social and environmental sustainability worldwide. The Co-operators was also included among "The Green 30", a list of Canada's top employers acknowledged by their staff for their sustainability efforts.

Last year saw The Co-operators working to fulfill the vision of becoming a catalyst for sustainability including setting robust internal targets, and working to mobilize others to act.

As the organization moves forward with its 2011-2014 sustainability strategy and begins to focus externally, The Co-operators will continue to incorporate sustainable principles and practices into all levels of the organization and demonstrate responsible, accountable and transparent governance.

"While we're proud of the progress we've made over the past several years to contribute to the economic, social and environmental sustainability of Canadian communities, we realize a lot of work lies ahead," said Kathy Bardswick, President and CEO of The Co-operators. "With the strong support of our staff members and agents right across the country, we will continue to set ambitious targets and work to engage communities in making a difference for this and future generations."

The Co-operators continued its work in 2011 to support Canadian communities. A total of $6.1 million was contributed to worthy causes, including corporate funding as well as staff and agent donations and volunteerism.

In the fall of 2011, The Co-operators hosted its second IMPACT! Youth Conference for Sustainability Leadership, engaging and empowering university and college students from across Canada to advance sustainable ideas in their communities. On a broader scale, The Co-operators is also advocating for action on climate change. In 2011 the organization was involved in the drafting of the Principles for Sustainable Insurance - a project led by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative.
